Is Gum Disease An Emergency? Three Questions To Ask

At Vanguard OnCall Dental Urgent Care in Derry NH , we know that the definition of an emergency can be highly subjective. In order to validate all our patients’ needs and concerns, we usually adhere to the rule that if it feels like an emergency, it is one!

However, gum disease can tend to fall into that very subjective category of potential emergencies. In order to help clear it up, we have three easy questions to ask yourself in order to ascertain if your symptoms consist of an easy-to-treat infection or a major tooth-loss risk.

  1. Do You See Blood? When you brush your teeth and floss your gums, do you see a large amount of blood in the sink? Does it go away after a few weeks of consistent care or does it persist? If it sticks around, it might be a sign of advanced periodontal disease.
  2. Are Your Gums Sensitive? When you run your fingers or brush over your gums, are they particularly sensitive to touch? What about hot and cold foods? Do they cause a painful reaction? This could be another sign that you have gum disease, and if left untreated, could lead to tooth loss.
  3. Are Your Teeth Loose? If your teeth feel looser than usual, it could be a symptom of decaying gums.
