Mouthguards and Knockouts

Millions of people of all ages have a tooth knocked out every year. Many of their accidents happen while playing sports. At Vanguard OnCall Dental Urgent Care in Derry NH we don’t think there is a better way to make the case for wearing a mouthguard.

Some studies show, in fact, that you are sixty times more likely to suffer some kind of dental injury if you don’t wear a mouthguard while playing. When the unexpected happens, a mouthguard helps to cushion the impact.

Treatment ASAP

Nevertheless, accidents happen. Teeth get knocked out. Technically called an avulsed tooth, it’s one of the most serious dental emergencies there is.

When it happens, it’s critical to seek treatment immediately. If an avulsed tooth is treated within an hour there is a very good chance it can be successfully replanted.

It’s also critical to keep your wits about you: not the easiest thing, under the circumstances. Find the knocked out tooth, being sure to pick it up by the crown, which is the biting and chewing part. Never touch the root. It’s okay to rinse it off with milk or water, but do not wipe it off. That could cause further damage.

Keep the tooth moist. You can place it between your teeth and gums, or in some milk if that’s handy. Then make a beeline to our office.
