What is a Periodontist?
Dentistry is concerned with far more than just your teeth. In fact, it is in the purview of a dentist to care for your gums, jaw, and facial structure as well. Perio is a Greek-based prefix meaning “around” or “near”. Therefore, periodontics involves everything around or near the teeth. This branch of dentistry works to keep your whole mouth healthy. What Is Gum Disease?
This oral health issue is prevalent because it is so easy to fall prey to the overwhelming number of bacteria in your mouth. When daily oral hygiene and regular dental checkups are neglected, the ever-present bacteria are able to settle into the nooks and crannies of your teeth and gums. This leads to a buildup of plaque.
Plaque irritates your gum tissue, causing it to redden, swell slightly, and become highly sensitive. You may even experience minor bleeding. This type of gum disease is known as gingivitis.
Untreated gingivitis can lead to a more advanced form of gum disease and contribute to other health issues. Periodontitis is the more advanced form of gum disease and can have many lasting effects on the health of your gums, bone, and teeth.
Chronic bad breath, temperature sensitivity, pain, receding gums, and loosening of teeth are all characteristics of periodontitis. If it is not reversed, this problem can even result in the loss of your teeth.

Gingivitis is easy to treat here at Vanguard Dental Group. When you come in for your regular appointments, we clean plaque and tartar from your teeth, giving you a fresh, healthy mouth. With this professional cleaning and upkeep on your daily hygiene, your gums will soon heal.
Periodontitis is more difficult to treat, as the damage is much more severe. However, there’s good news on that front as well. Our office can use a LANAP laser to do deep cleaning. This gets rid of any infected tissue, allows us to remove tartar from below the gum line, and sterilizes areas where plaque has been lingering.
The LANAP treatment is highly effective at giving your gums that same fresh start, as well as encouraging the healing of the gum tissue.
